Shayani Ekadashi: The Divine Slumber of Lord Vishnu

Shayani Ekadashi: The Divine Slumber of Lord Vishnu

What is Shayani Ekadashi?

Shayani Ekadashi, also known as Devshayani Ekadashi or Ashadhi Ekadashi, is a sacred Hindu festival observed on the 11th day (Ekadashi) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Ashadha (June–July). It marks the beginning of Chaturmas, a four-month period during which Lord Vishnu is believed to enter a state of yoga nidra (cosmic sleep) on the serpent Shesha in the Ksheer Sagar (cosmic ocean)

This period is considered highly auspicious for spiritual practices, penance, and devotion, but inauspicious for events like weddings or housewarmings.

The Story Behind Shayani Ekadashi

The legend associated with Shayani Ekadashi centers around King Mandata, a righteous and kind ruler whose kingdom once suffered a severe drought. Rivers dried up, crops failed, and people were in distress. Seeking divine intervention, the king approached Sage Angira, who advised him to observe the Devshayani Ekadashi vrat with full devotion to Lord Vishnu.

King Mandata followed the fast sincerely, and soon after, rains returned, prosperity was restored, and peace prevailed. This story highlights the power of faith and the blessings that come from sincere devotion

Why Observe Shayani Ekadashi?

Shayani Ekadashi is observed to:

  • Seek blessings from Lord Vishnu for peace, prosperity, and spiritual growth.

  • Mark the beginning of Chaturmas, a time for introspection and spiritual discipline.

  • Cleanse the body and mind through fasting and prayer.

  • Honor the divine rest of Lord Vishnu, symbolizing a pause from worldly distractions.

It’s also closely linked with the Pandharpur Wari pilgrimage in Maharashtra, where devotees walk to the Vithoba temple in Pandharpur, celebrating the devotion of saints like Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar.

Here are the key rituals and practices:

 Preparations
