🪔 What is Apara Ekadashi? 

Apara Ekadashi is one of the 24 sacred Ekadashi fasts in the Hindu calendar. Observed during the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) of the Jyeshtha month, it is believed to absolve devotees of their past sins and grant spiritual clarity. “Apara” in Sanskrit means "limitless," indicating the vast spiritual merit earned by observing this vrat. 

 

📜 When Did It Occur? (The Story of King Bali & Lord Trivikrama) 

According to ancient scriptures, Apara Ekadashi is deeply connected to the legend of King Bali, a powerful but egoistic demon king. King Bali was known for his immense charity, but his pride and ambition grew with his conquests, even challenging the gods. 

To humble Bali and protect the cosmic balance, Lord Vishnu took the Vamana (dwarf) avatar. Disguised as a humble Brahmin boy, Vamana approached King Bali during a grand yagna. 

Vamana: “O mighty king, grant me just three steps of land.” 

Bali (laughing): “Three steps? Ask for more, Brahmin! You underestimate my generosity.” 

Vamana: “Three will do.” 

As soon as Bali agreed, Vamana transformed into Lord Trivikrama, a giant form. With one step, he covered the Earth, the second the heavens. With no space left, Bali offered his own head for the third step, surrendering himself fully. 

This event symbolizes humility, devotion, and self-sacrifice — and marks the cosmic moment that gave rise to the spiritual essence of Apara Ekadashi.
